Agency Type:

Foundation / Corporation

Funding Source:

Add to My Calendar

John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation

Deadline Date:

09/16/19

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Fellowships to USA and Canada individual scholars, writers, artists, and scientists in advanced stages of their career to support work in various fields. Funding is intended for professionals with a significant record of publication, exhibition, or performance who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts.

Applications that attempt to span too many disparate disciplines, or that include too many objectives, are less competitive than those that propose a balanced, focused goal.

Since the purpose of the Guggenheim Fellowship program is to help provide Fellows with blocks of time in which they can work with as much creative freedom as possible, grants are made freely. No special conditions attach to them, and Fellows may spend their grant funds in any manner they deem necessary to their work.

Number of Grants:

Approximately 175 Fellowships are awarded each year.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The amounts of grants vary, and the Foundation does not guarantee it will fully fund any project.

Term of Contract:

Guggenheim Fellowships are grants to selected individuals made for a minimum of six months and a maximum of twelve months.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Advanced professionals may apply. The Foundation understands advanced professionals to be those who as writers, scholars, or scientists have a significant record of publication, or as artists, playwrights, filmmakers, photographers, composers, or the like, have a significant record of exhibition or performance of their work.

The Foundation understands the performing arts to be those in which an individual interprets work created by others. Accordingly, the Foundation will provide Fellowships to composers but not conductors, singers, or instrumentalists; choreographers but not dancers; filmmakers, playwrights, and performance artists who create their own work but not actors or theater directors.

Limitations:
- All applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada at the time of application.
- Awards are intended for individuals only; they are not available to organizations, institutions, or groups.
- Guggenheim Fellowships are not open to students (undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate).
- Persons who have already received a Guggenheim Fellowship are not eligible to apply for another.
- Guggenheim Fellowships are not available for the creation of residencies, curriculum development, or any type of educational program, nor are they available to support the development of websites or blogs.
- Awards are not available to support the writing of literature for children or young readers, or support any other type of work (e.g., films, plays, etc.) intended for young audiences.
- Anthology, oral history, e-book, or textbook projects are not supported.
- Published writing not regarded as appropriate for this competition includes self-published works, publications for which the author has paid, and publications by publishers who do not engage in a process of critical review of submitted work. In addition, genre work (e.g., mysteries, romance, fantasy, etc.) is considered not competitive.
- For writers that have mainly published in periodicals, or on websites, it might be premature to apply at this stage of their career, given the rigorous nature of the competition.
