Artistic quality is determined only by the quality of the submitted documentation.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Artists may request no less than $1,000 and no more than $2,000.

Term of Contract:

All work presented in the grant application, narrative, and included in the projected budget expenses must take place within the defined grant period (July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021).

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Artists in any discipline may apply. Applicants must be residents of South Dakota for at least two years immediately preceding the application and must reside in the state until the project has been completed and evaluated.

Artists may apply for only one of the following grants per fiscal year: Artist Fellowship, Artist Project Grant, Artist Collaboration Grant, or Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grant.

Recipients of an Artist Project Grant or an Artist Collaboration Grant are not eligible to receive a grant in either category for three consecutive fiscal years. For example, an artist awarded either grant for fiscal year 2011 is ineligible to receive another grant in the two categories for fiscal years 2012, 2013, and 2014; however, the artist may apply March 1, 2014 for an FY 2015 grant in either category. Recipients of Artist Project Grants are eligible to apply for Artist Fellowships and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants in subsequent years without fulfilling the waiting period requirement.

- Funding will not be granted for academic research or formal study toward an academic or professional degree.
- Students pursuing high school diplomas or graduate or undergraduate degrees are not eligible.
- South Dakota Arts Council board members, staff, and grant review panelists are not eligible to apply for Artist Grants.

All grant funds must be matched at least dollar for dollar by the applicant.

SDAC staff members offer a draft review prior to final grant submission deadlines to help applicants improve their applications by checking for mistakes or omissions that might cause ineligibility. Staff will review the grant narrative, budget section, and support materials for compliance and consistency. Draft reviews do not provide grammatical editing or rewriting services.
