Grants of up to $25,000 and grants of up to $90,000 to South Dakota early-career faculty members at public higher education institutions to encourage science and technology research. Funding is intended to provide tenure-track researchers the opportunity to develop programs that will be more competitive for external contracts and grants, resulting in new commercial economic development opportunities for State residents.

The Competitive Research Grant (CRG) Program is an initiative designed to strengthen South Dakota’s research competitiveness. The program provides continued research opportunities for tenure track faculty within their first four years of employment. The goal of the program is fourfold:

1) To increase the level of university research in South Dakota’s technology based economic development;
2) To further expand academic research;
3) To build additional statewide research capacity; and
4) To exploit new commercial development opportunities arising from it.

Researchers may apply for awards in one of two tracks:
- Track I grant awards are intended to cover salaries, post-doctoral assistance, student support, start-up packages, or infrastructure related expenditures that are necessary to advance a research agenda, with an emphasis on acquiring external grant awards.
- Track II grant awards are intended to cover salaries, student/staff support, or modest infrastructure related expenditures that may be used to facilitate a record of successful external grant submissions. For additional information on Track II grants, see the RFP:

Preference will be given to faculty research proposals in the seven key research and development areas identified in the 2020 Vision: The South Dakota Science and Innovation Strategy (found in Supporting Documents below), which include:

1) Advanced Manufacturing & Materials;
2) Energy and Environment;
3) Human Health and Nutrition (including Medical Technology);
4) Information Technology/Cyber Security/Information Assurance;
5) Plant and Animal Bioscience;
6) Underground Science & Engineering; and
7) Visualization (from the molecular level to global systems).

For more information on Research Focus Area priorities, see the RFP:
