Awards to USA individuals and organizations to recognize outstanding efforts to improve the lives of blind people. Previous winners have been recognized for changing negative perceptions of blindness, and breaking down barriers that face people who are blind. Each year, if feasible, awards are given to applicants in the following categories: blind individuals, sighted individuals, and corporate or organizational entities. Winners have included entrepreneurs, volunteers, film-makers, authors, mathematicians, technology developers, artists, teachers, nonprofit organizations, programs, partnerships, and more.
Award winners have:
- Broken down a barrier facing blind people in an innovative way.
- Changed negative perceptions of blindness and blind people.
- Pushed past existing boundaries to inspire blind people to achieve new heights.
Examples of winning projects include developing products or techniques that increase the independence of the blind, creating and/or directing high-quality programs for the blind, and mentoring or inspiring other blind people to achieve their dreams.

Winners receive a cash award. The number of awards and the amount of each award will be determined by NFB’s Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award Committee based on its evaluation of eligible and deserving applicants.
