Grants to South Dakota undergraduate and graduate students at institutions of higher education for internships related to the STEM fields. Funding, in the form of stipends, is intended to support internships that take place during the summer or during the fall/spring semester. Internship projects must align with NASA’s mission and those of the SDSGC and its affiliates.

Internship Stipend Types:

  • NASA Center Internship stipends are fully-funded by Space Grant for undergraduate students and graduate students to support 10-week Summer internships and 16-week Fall/Spring semester internships at NASA Centers. NASA Center Internships may be: A) fully-funded by Space Grant, B) cooperatively-funded by Space Grant and NASA, or C) fully-funded by NASA. Case-specific internship stipends may also be provided to students selected for aerospace industry internships.
  • BOREALIS Ballooning Internships: Up to two internship stipends will be provided to students participating in Montana Space Grant Consortium’s High-Altitude “Balloon Outreach, Research, Exploration and Landscape Imaging System” (BOREALIS) summer 2021 program. 

The goal of the SD Space Grant Consortium Fellowship/Scholarship Program is to offer educational and research opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds who are pursuing degrees in fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The purpose of both undergraduate and graduate fellowship stipends is to reward past accomplishments and recognize potential future achievements.

BOREALIS Ballooning Internships: Up to two internship stipends

Estimated Size of Grant:

NASA Center Internship stipends: Standardized amounts of $7,300 (undergraduate students) and $9,000 (graduate students) for 10-week Summer internships, and $11,680 (undergraduate) and $14,400 (graduate) for 16-week Fall/Spring semester internships at NASA Centers, plus an additional $1,500 travel allowance to those amounts.

BOREALIS Ballooning Internships: $7,500 stipends

Term of Contract:

FY2021 Academic Year (Summer and Fall 2021 & Spring 2022)

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

All applicants must be citizens of the United States. Stipends under this solicitation are available only to students attending South Dakota institutions of higher education during the award period.

Women students and students from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

The stipends are made to individuals and are not to be considered compensation for employment.

The application deadline is January 14, 2021, by 11:59 PM MST.

Applications must include a recommendation letter from a faculty member and address the student's qualifications for the Space Grant stipend.

Awards will be announced by March 17, 2021.
