Opportunity for USA, Canada, and International nonprofit and for-profit organizations, NGOs, universities, and social enterprises to collaborate with governments to address urgent digital needs. Successful applicants will be featured in a catalog in order to be matched with UNDP and governments in over 170 countries.

Digital X is a Partnerships for Scale Programme developed by UNDP Chief Digital Office to find, match, and scale proven and innovative digital solutions around the world.

Based on discussions with UNDP Country Offices and teams from around the world, Digital X has been designed to focus on the following problems:

Governments and UNDP global network urgently need digital solutions. A well-designed digital solution can impact millions of lives and support populations in new and innovative ways.
Building digital solutions from nothing rarely works. Most digital solutions built by development professionals either reinvent the wheel, fail to adhere to the Principles for Digital Development, or fail to achieve meaningful impact.
Lack of scaling what already works. The good news is that proven and readyto-scale digital solutions – that have scaled nationwide or across multiple countries – do exist. In addition to being much faster to implement, utilizing an existing digital solution can result in an average 40% cost reduction (DIAL). The problem is that proven solutions are often disconnected from the needs of UNDP and governments.

Funding can be applied towards:

Hiring consultants (such as UNDP consultants to manage implementation of a solution or developers to adapt a digital solution to become Open Source, SaaS, a Digital Public Good, or white-labeled product for UNDP).
Payment of services or a clear scope of work from a digital solution provider (such as a social enterprise, nonprofit, university, etc.).
Purchase cutting edge technology that enables scaled rollout of a proven digital solution.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Teams that are selected into the Digital X Solutions Catalogue, receive:
- Introductions to UNDP teams and governments in the 170 countries where UNDP operates.
- Opportunity to partner with UNDP teams on projects of up to USD 100,000 with adhoc mentoring support.
- Optional guidance on becoming a Digital Public Good and a chance for new funding opportunities.

Term of Contract:

July 1, 2022 - May 31, 2023: Project Implementation

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

UN teams, social enterprises, private sector companies, academic teams, NGOs, and nonprofits can apply. Only proven digital solutions that are relevant to the Global Challenges should apply.

Any team with a proven, mature digital solution can apply to a Digital X Global Challenge. This includes UNDP or UN teams with digital solutions, registered social enterprises, universities, private sector companies, NGOs, and nonprofits.

Not considered:
- Ideas, concepts, or very early-stage digital solutions.
- Solutions that risk or ignore data privacy of users.
- Proposals that do not have a clear ‘runway’ of funds available or ability to operate without UNDP funding.
- Digital solutions without a clear owner or full-time team behind implementation.

Pre-proposal Conference:

Starting April 26 UNDP will be opening their Digital X Virtual Roadshow - a series of talks and ‘Ask Me Anything’ sessions hosted by UNDP, thematic experts, as well as Digital X Network collaborators (like Google, WFP, and UNDP Accelerators).

The Digital X programme is reviewing applications on a rolling basis now through May 31, 2022!

Phase 1
April 20 - May 31: Global call for applications
May 2 - July 30: Tech review and vetting
June 1 - September 15: Selected solutions are featured in DX Catalogue
Phase 2
June 1 - September 15: Matchmaking solutions with UNDP County Offices
June 1 - September 31: County Offices apply for funding
July 1, 2022 - May 31, 2023: Project Implementation

Please note: only UNDP Country Offices can apply for funding in partnership with teams or digital solutions that are first listed in the Digital X Solutions Catalogue starting 1 June.

While funding will go directly to UNDP teams, they can apply in a partnership with a digital solution managed by a social enterprise, academia, CSO, nonprofit, or the private sector.

If your team or office owns multiple digital solutions, yes, you can apply to different challenges, however, you must complete a separate application for each product.
